Derron's Story

Derron Watson
Area Manager, Huntsville, AL

Most kids growing up want to be a policeman or a fireman, but I knew early on that I wanted to be a "businessman," even though I didn't really know what that meant. I've always been entrepreneurial, so I pursued a business degree with an emphasis on marketing and management. I enjoy managing people and having a positive impact on the business, and Enterprise has offered me the experience to help meet that goal.

I started working for Enterprise in Maryland nine years ago. Because it was a diverse area, there was an opportunity to help develop regional diversity initiatives. When a diversity management position became available at the Corporate office in St. Louis, I pursued it and served as Corporate Diversity Manager for three years. The position enabled me to help create a diversity strategy and then execute it by taking what I had learned from a regional perspective and applying it companywide. I recently transitioned to my current position of Area Manager, former Regional Rental Manager, Huntsville, Ala., and I'm excited to be taking what I learned from my corporate experience and applying it back out in the field.

Enterprise has given me the opportunity to work with and learn from very successful people. I've drawn from that experience to build upon my own success. I also enjoy developing my employees. It's rewarding for me to see others reach their dreams and goals, and I know that my own career will be enhanced if I contribute to the development of our future potential leaders.

At Enterprise, the environment is one of teamwork and fun. The environment is so infectious that customers can feel the energy when they walk in the door. They can hear the smile in your voice when you're talking to them on the phone. If you work as a team and have fun, you can do great things.

I enjoy spending my free time with my family, including my three daughters. I also enjoy traveling, and playing golf and video games. I encourage my employees to find a balance between their work and personal lives. For me, planning and scheduling are key. There are 24 hours in a day and seven days in a week — that never changes. What you can change is how you prioritize your tasks.

I would tell people who are considering a career at Enterprise that the company wants you to have a career — not just a job. Enterprise promotes from within so that you can apply what you've learned — you can take your experiences and move up in the company to get a well-rounded business experience. This is a company that can give you what you need to be successful and, if you work hard, you will be recognized and financially rewarded.

Each of the Enterprise values speak to me, particularly "Enterprise is a fun and friendly place, where teamwork rules" and "We work hard and we reward hard work." At some companies, employees put in years of hard work and get a "thank you." At Enterprise, when you work hard and achieve results, you are rewarded and promoted. The company is true to its word — it's not just lip service at Enterprise.
