Angie's Story
Angie Lauer
Fleet Operations Accounting Manager, St. Louis, MOWhen I applied for a position as Payroll Coordinator at Enterprise's National Reservations center seven years ago, I had just moved to the United States from Windsor, Ontario and knew very little about the company. At the interview, the Enterprise employees were so friendly and enthusiastic about the company that I turned down all the other offers I had received and took the job with Enterprise in St. Louis.
That same enthusiasm and team spirit continues to make it a pleasure for me to come to work every day. One of the company's Founding Values is "Enterprise is a fun and friendly place where teamwork rules," and I do my best to keep that value alive in my current position as Accounting Manager for Fleet Operations in St. Louis. I manage a team of 15 employees who trust me to be fair and provide them with assistance and guidance, and I trust them to do the best job they can to achieve the goals of the department. We work hard to achieve success as a team, but we also maintain a fun environment.
For example, when I was promoted to Accounting Manager, there wasn't enough space for me to have an office yet. So one night my team stayed late and transformed my cube into a cardboard office, complete with a door, windows, roof and a welcome mat.
One of my favorite experiences with Enterprise was when I volunteered through our Diversity Team to be a Special Olympics "buddy." Each of us partnered with an Olympian for the day to help them get to each of their events, cheer them on, and eat lunch with them. It was an extremely rewarding and fun way to give back to our community.
But the thing I enjoy most about Enterprise is that I am always challenged to be better and learn more about the business. Enterprise promotes from within based on merit instead of seniority, so I can advance my career as far and as fast as my hard work can take me. I have always been upfront with my managers about my career goals, and they have provided me with the guidance I needed to move my career to the next level. My career path has afforded me the opportunity to hold accounting positions with our National Reservations Call Center, our Referral Car Sales division, and with Fleet Operations. With each promotion, I have had the opportunity to take on new challenges — and that makes work exciting and fulfilling.
Outside of work, I stay busy spending time with my daughter, volunteering at my church and traveling to Canada to visit family. I have learned to set my priorities so that my work gets done without sacrificing quality time with my daughter. This will become even more important when my second daughter is born this spring. Fortunately, Enterprise provides the flexibility I need to balance my work with my personal life.
