Andrew's Story

Andrew Butts
Human Resources Manager, Chicago, IL

Before I began my career with Enterprise as a Management Trainee in Cleveland, I played football at the Ohio State University. After graduation, I wasn't sure what my professional goals were, but I knew I wanted to work in a team-oriented and fun environment. Then I discovered what my future could be at Enterprise. I had no idea I would be in recruiting, but after more than 14 years with the company, I couldn't imagine a more perfect career path for me.

Today, I oversee the recruiting and training departments in Chicago for Enterprise. My most rewarding experiences with the company continue to be the phone calls and e-mails I receive from employees giving me enthusiastic updates on their successes with Enterprise. It's flattering and very humbling to have employees thank me for talking with them at career fairs about all the opportunities available at Enterprise. It continues to motivate me today!

I like to compare the culture at Enterprise to that of a winning team. I play pick-up basketball on the weekends and everyone wants to play on a winning team. In the beginning, you may not know your teammates or anything about them, but after striving toward that common goal, you start to understand everyone's role on the team. There's no substitute for the joy of working with people who are driven to succeed just like you, and that's what Enterprise is all about.

When I'm not working, I love to travel with my wife, Jessica, and our four kids. We take at least one family vacation a year. We also have a Friday night movie tradition in our house, and even with the challenges of school schedules and commitments we rarely miss it. Balancing my work life with my personal life has taught me to be very organized. I try to attend as many of my children's school events as possible, and include my family at work functions when I can. My daughters have accompanied me to a couple of recruiting events on college campuses and found that, in addition to getting to see a little of my job responsibilities, the events were good introductions into career and college research.

My favorite thing about Enterprise is how management empowers employees to run their businesses and get involved in their communities. Through our open door policy, employees and customers can voice concerns about any aspect of our business and be confident they will be addressed. We always listen to the new ideas from the smart people we hire, just as my managers did when I started.
